One tag, one festival, one city
Northern Trust came to Future Proof to spend three days with people who matter to them: clients they have had for years, advisors they had just met, and relationships that were only starting to take shape. A branded tote does nothing for any of those conversations.
So we built them a custom luggage tag station. Guests walked up, chose their piece, and watched their own monogram go onto a special edition tag made for this festival, in this city, this year. One half of it says who hosted them. The other half says it belongs to them, and only them.
That is the difference between swag and a gift. A custom piece, handed to them in person, reads as a gesture toward the individual rather than an item off a table, and it lands the same way with a client of fifteen years as it does with someone met ten minutes ago. It is also genuinely useful. Everyone at Future Proof Festival travels for business, and that luggage tag not only flies with them back home, but on all of their future journeys.
Attendees kept telling us how special it was, and that they would be using it right away on their luggage.
Why we slowed the station down
Here is the part most people do not expect. We can make a lot of our pieces fast. On this one, going fast would have been a mistake.
Luggage tags are one of the options whose production time can be scaled on purpose. Sometimes a client wants speed, to move a long line at a keynote break. Sometimes a client wants the opposite: a reason for a guest to stay in the booth, or a reason to come back later and pick the piece up.
Northern Trust wanted the conversation. So we set the pace to leave room for one. While a tag was being made, their team was talking with the person it belonged to, and the wait itself became the meeting. Guests who could not stay had a reason to return to the booth later in the day, which is its own kind of second touch.
Running a station on the sand
Open air venues are their own discipline. A tag station has a small footprint and no fabric to handle, which makes it one of the easier pieces to run well at a beachfront festival, a rooftop, or a tented sponsor booth. We walk the space first, or work through the pre-rendered space, build around the booth's traffic flow, and set up so the guest's attention lands on the piece being made and on the backdrop behind it. At Future Proof, that backdrop was the pier.
